New Co-op store set to open in former Grey Horse pub in Whitburn and create 15 new jobs
Whitburn’s new Co-op shop will welcome its first shoppers through its doors following a £650,000 investment to transform a former pub.
This is an old article that appeared in the Shields Gazette on Thursday, 18th February 2021. As part of this website, it is important that some important old local Whitburn stories are saved to the site for archiving and historical purposes. Future Whitburn related articles will be written directly by this Whitburn Village website and by local people to the village.
The launch of the new convenience store, created inside the old Grey Horse building on the corner of Mill Lane and North Guards, will create 15 jobs.
The shop, which will open from 6am to 11pm every day, will officer customer car parking, a bakery and Costa coffee express, alongside an “improved focus” on fresh, healthy produce, ready meals and pizzas, wines, free-from and vegan products, Fairtrade and food-to-go.
A click and collect service is available through its online and students in Whitburn who are TOTUM cardholders - the new name for NUS extra – can benefit from a a 10% discount off groceries.
Ben Letby, Co-op area manager, said: “We’re really looking forward to opening the new store and creating new jobs in Whitburn.
"Co-op is committed to connecting communities and we’re excited to meet and greet those in the local area.
"I wanted to let locals know that they can become members of the Co-op and unlock additional value and personalised offers.
"Our members also make a difference to local causes, with Co-op now donating 2% to community causes every time a member swipes their Membership card when buying own-branded products.”
Damian Judson, manager, added: “The whole team are excited to welcome customers to the new store.
"We have worked to develop the range, choice, products and services locally that will create a really compelling offer in the community.”
The business, set up after the pub building was sold by Greene King, also offers the Community Shopping Card makes it easier for those self-isolating or who have been instructed to stay at home to shop and pay for their essentials.
Cards can be purchased or topped-up by calling 0800 029 4592, enabling friends, families, neighbours or volunteers to shop on their behalf in store.
The Grey Horse closed to drinkers in February 2019, with a petition launched to oppose plans by its new owners to turn it into a shop with flats above.
The building is classed as a ‘locally significant heritage asset’ by South Tyneside Council with the building dating back to 1840.
However, plans were approved by the council, with members saying it would be a benefit to the village.
