Jolly Sailor - Whitburn
The Jolly Sailor is a well established traditional pub, the last remaining in the heart of Whitburn, run by Vic and Charlie . The pub offers live sport events on TV, and karaoke on Sundays at 8pm. They aren't currently serving meals, but hopefully the option of food may return at some point.
Located in the centre of Whitburn next to a busy junction the Jolly Sailor has been at the centre of village life for over 300 years. Comprising of three rooms, of which the main bar is the smallest. Three handpulls dispense changing ales.
Lunchtime meals (not currently available) would normally be provided in the Captains cabin, which is just to the right of the entrance.
Parking is available nearby but is sometimes limited. However, buses pass right by the door going both to Sunderland and through to South Shields.
The Mamma Mia's Italian Restaurant is situated above the pub.
The Jolly Sailor welcoming customers back after the covid lockdown:
This would have been a welcome sight for both landlord and customers. We all went through the covid lockdown thing and it's taken a long time for things to return to the new normal, so it's easy to see why customers appreciate being able to have their nice cold pint at the pub again.
Customers enjoying a drink in the evening sunshine
When the sun is shining and it feels warm on the skin, what better way to spend an evening than sitting outside with a nice cool drink.

Ghostly History
The Jolly Sailor is no ordinary pub. So legend has it a young lady wearing a fine green dress is said to walk the passages. This lovelorn girl had bought herself this fine green dress to impress her would-be suitor, a visiting coachman, but alas he rejected her and as a result she pined herself away, but she continues to walk the passages hoping for her love to return.
It is also said that a grey lady resides in the pub, although very little is known of her. Although a catering manager did state she had seen a grey figure going into one of the bedrooms and that "it looked like a pall of smoke moving about and it resembled an old lady".
The landlords brother Charlie says he has seen and felt strange things happen, but his brother Vic says the only spirits around the place are those on the optics, but should they be there, they are as welcome as any other customer.
There are many other tales associated with this old pubs history. CLICK HERE to read a bit more about them on the Mysterious Britain website.
